Contribution amount depends on the income of both spouses

The income of the spouse or partner must also be taken into account for the amount of the health insurance contribution of a voluntary member if they are privately insured.

The health insurance contribution of voluntarily insured persons is also based on the income of the privately insured spouse. The State Social Court of Hesse has confirmed that the entire financial capacity of a voluntarily insured member must be taken into account for the contribution. In addition to their own income, this also includes half of the income of their spouse or partner, provided they are not also a member of the statutory health insurance scheme. The reason given by the court for this is that the income of the higher-earning spouse is the decisive factor for the economic situation within the marriage.
