Coalition decides on significantly higher child benefit in the short term

The increase in child benefit planned for 2023 is almost doubled to 250 euros from the first child shortly before the law is passed.

With the third relief package, the coalition government had already held out the prospect of increasing child benefit to 237 euros for the first and second child from 2023. This was then quickly extended to the third child. Now the coalition has surprised everyone by announcing that the increase has even been increased to 250 euros at short notice. Currently, child benefit for the first and second child is 219 euros each and 225 euros per month for the third child. From the fourth child onwards, there is already 250 euros. The new increase means that from 2023 all children will receive the same amount of child benefit of 250 euros per month, making the planned adjustment the largest increase in child benefit in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany.
