Child benefit for a child with a long-term illness
Despite a serious intention to continue education as soon as possible, the education-related child benefit entitlement for a child with a long-term illness may cease.
A child who has reached the age of majority and is undergoing vocational training is not entitled to child benefit if training measures are not taken due to an illness that is not temporary. The Federal Fiscal Court does not consider an illness to be temporary if it is highly likely that the impairment will last longer than six months from the onset of the illness. However, the Federal Fiscal Court also points out that a child benefit claim due to a disability of the child can be considered instead if the child was unable to support himself or herself due to the disability as a result of the illness.
