Tax return deadlines for 2020 extended by three months

All taxpayers will be given an extra three months to file their 2020 tax returns with the IRS due to the Corona pandemic.

Due to the Corona pandemic, the deadline for submitting the tax return for 2019 was already extended by six months at the beginning of the year. However, this deadline extension only applied to declarations prepared by tax advisors, as the general declaration deadline had already expired for some time. Since the pandemic-related additional workload is not yet over in many cases and the tax return for 2020 is associated with additional questions for most taxpayers, the Bundestag and Bundesrat have now also decided to extend the tax return deadline for 2020. Unlike for 2019, this time the extension is only three months, but it applies to all taxpayers. Those who submit their tax returns to the tax office themselves will therefore have until October 31, 2021 to do so.
