Tax ID number to become citizen number
The tax ID number is to become a universal personal identification number for data exchange between all public authorities.
When every citizen was assigned a uniform federal tax ID number in 2007, opponents went to the barricades because they feared total surveillance of citizens sooner or later. Now a major step is being taken in precisely this direction. The federal government's decision on the Corona stimulus package includes a declaration of intent to turn the tax ID number into a citizen number that will be used by all administrations: In order to drive e-government forward, the various authorities are to be able to exchange data on citizens in the future and use the tax ID number as a unique identifier for this purpose. A draft law is planned for this summer.
