Changes in health insurance contributions as of 2019
Health insurance contributions will once again be split 50/50 between employer and employee from 2019. In addition, the minimum contribution for self-employed persons will be reduced.
On November 23, 2018, the Bundesrat approved the Insured Persons Relief Act. The main purpose of the law is that from January 1, 2019, employers and employees will once again each pay half of the health insurance contributions, including the additional contributions. The 2005 reform by the grand coalition, under which employees had to pay the additional contributions alone, has thus been reversed. Self-employed people with low incomes who are voluntary members of the statutory health insurance system will also benefit from the new regulations. For them, the minimum monthly contribution is halved to 171 euros.
