Corona crisis: limit for contactless payment doubled to 50 euros

For contactless payments with the girocard, the limit is to be doubled to 50 euros in the short term in order to be able to process more purchases without direct contact during the Corona crisis.

The German banking industry wants to increase contactless card payments with girocards without PIN entry from 25 to 50 euros. In the current situation, this makes it easier to pay at the checkout. Of the more than 100 million girocards, 75 million are now equipped with the contactless function. Furthermore, cardholders must re-enter their PIN after five transactions or a total of 150 euros at the latest. Customers who do not wish to enter a PIN at all can use the digital girocard in their smartphone.
