Curious types of tax: WSB about the wig tax
We Germans can look back on a long tradition of bureaucracy. And to this day, this term is often associated with tax law.
For example, Frederick I was Duke and later King of Prussia from 1688 - and a lover of lavish wigs. He took advantage of his influence on fashion and devised a wig tax!
Fashion-conscious wearers had to shell out a proud three thalers. This corresponds to around 50.00 euros from today's perspective. Mind you, for every wig worn in public!
It goes without saying that the collection and control of the tax could not be carried out without bureaucratic effort! After all, a royal wig inspector and around a dozen sub-inspectors were required to check the stamp, which was affixed to the wig after payment of the tax.
Pulling your hair out? Luckily there's no tax for the perfect look today! 😉
