This is how many employees use the commuter allowance. The Federal Statistical Office has derived other interesting figures from the 2020 wage and income tax statistics.

Employees traveled an average of 28 km on their way to work. The distance and the rate of car use varied between 24 km and 68 % car use for city dwellers and 30 km and 91 % for small towns.

Incidentally, the commuter allowance is currently EUR 0.30 for the first 20 km and EUR 0.38 for each additional kilometer. Only the one-way distance between home and the first place of work on the shortest or most convenient road connection counts.
