WSB figure of the month: 34,247 completed tax investigation cases in 2024

New statistics from the Federal Ministry of Finance provide astonishing figures. Including this one: In 2024, the tax investigation department dealt with 34,247 cases.

Tax evasion as a national sport?

- The offices for fines and criminal matters of the tax offices processed 50,000 proceedings for tax offenses nationwide.

- In addition, 5,900 fine proceedings were concluded and fines of 14.5 million euros were imposed.

- The tax investigation department dealt with 34,247 cases. This resulted in additional taxes of 2.6 billion euros, prison sentences of 1,345 years and fines of 16.8 million euros.

Tax evasion is not a trivial offense

Anyone who evades taxes should be aware of this penalty range:

- If the amount evaded is 50,000 euros or more, a custodial sentence - possibly on probation - must generally be imposed.

- Anyone who reaches an evasion amount of 1,000,000 euros can generally no longer hope for a suspended sentence, but must be imprisoned.

Golden bridge to impunity

However, tax evaders can clear the air with the tax authorities by filing a voluntary declaration with exemption from punishment. However, this „apology“ only works as long as the crime has not yet been discovered.
