WSB tax knowledge: How the state supports your offspring
Children are our future, but as we all know, they also cost a lot of money ...
Parents receive a range of support to ease the burden:
The family funds pay a contribution for each offspring Child benefit of 255.00 euros per month (from 2026: 259.00 euros).
Payment is made until the age of majority, or until the 25th birthday at the latest in the case of training or studies.
Alternatively, the tax office grants one Child allowance of EUR 9,600.00 per year (from 2026: EUR 9,756.00), provided the tax relief is higher than the child benefit paid out.
Parents can deduct 80 % of their childcare costs, up to a maximum of EUR 4,800.00 per year and child, as special expenses.
If an adult child is accommodated away from home during training or studies, parents can apply for a Education allowance 1,200.00 per year as an extraordinary burden.
Parents can often use the financial support of a child without child benefit entitlement as Maintenance payments up to the amount of the basic tax-free allowance of 12,096.00 euros.
