WSB tax knowledge: Deducting medicines, remedies and aids for tax purposes

You only need the receipt or the invoice from the pharmacy as proof.

Since 2024, medicines and remedies have been prescribed to people with statutory health insurance using the new electronic prescription.

Do you have statutory health insurance? Then watch out!

💡 If you want to deduct your medicines, remedies and medical aids from your tax bill as extraordinary expenses, you must
Proof only:
- the receipt from the pharmacy or
- the invoice from the online pharmacy
be able to submit. This applies for the first time for the 2024 income tax return.

Please note: For previous years, the tax authorities still only recognize a prescription from a doctor or alternative practitioner.

What must be on the receipt and the invoice?

In order for the tax office to recognize the receipts as proof, they must contain the following information:

- Your name (this may still be missing for documents from 2024),
- the type of service, e.g. the name of the medication,
- the (co-payment) amount and
- the type of recipe.

And if you have private health insurance?

Instead of the prescription from your doctor or alternative practitioner, since 2024 you can alternatively submit the cost receipt from the pharmacy.
