Are you a lover of exquisite food? Then pay close attention:

If you buy lobster, caviar or oysters from a delicatessen, you will pay a whopping 19 % VAT on the price. This is because the reduced tax rate may not be applied to such „luxury food“.

But there is a new trick!

If you order a lobster with caviar in a restaurant, the restaurateur will only charge you 7 % VAT. Since 01.01.2026, the reduced tax rate applies to - all - food in restaurants.

On tap water in the restaurant, on the other hand, you pay the full 19 % VAT again.

That just melts in your mouth, doesn't it?
