Curiosities
WSB on curious tax types - This time with a milkmaid's bill
Have you recently stumbled across a petition from your local supermarket and various plant-based milk producers while shopping?
The aim of the initiative is to persuade the German government to rethink its approach to milk.
What milk is allowed to be - no wonder in Germany - is regulated by the Milk and Margarine Act, namely
„... the product of the normal udder secretion of species kept for milk production obtained by single or repeated milking“.
And what does German VAT law make of this?
While milk from cows, goats and sheep is subject to the reduced tax rate of 7 %, you have to pay a whopping 19 % VAT on plant-based alternatives such as oat, soy or almond milk.
The initiators of the petition denounce this unequal treatment. There is hardly any other EU country where it is as severe as in Germany.
You don't make a difference when it comes to milk, but want to be on the safe side for tax purposes? We can tell you exactly when 7 % and when 19 % VAT is due - over a glass of milk if you like. 😉
