AdV stands neither for „act of desperation“ (although this is obvious) nor for „all in vain“.

Rather, this abbreviation stands for „suspension of enforcement“ - and thus the symbolic pause button in tax law! AdV prevents your tax office from immediately demanding an amount from you that has been demanded in a notice.

How so?

Imagine you receive a tax assessment notice and have to pay 5,000.00 euros in arrears. If you discover discrepancies in the notice, you naturally lodge an objection. However, this alone does not save you from the obligation to pay. In order for the latter to be suspended, you must - you guessed it - apply for suspension of enforcement!

And the best thing is: if you have a tax advisor, he will have already taken care of everything before you can even say AdV. 😉
