Who reports you to the tax office? WSB explains why you will usually never know

Do you have disgruntled business partners, a disappointed ex or envious neighbors?

Which of you do you trust to report you?

The tax authorities receive thousands of reports every year and use these as grounds for tax audits, cash register inspections or criminal investigations.

You will probably never know.

As the Federal Fiscal Court recently ruled, reported persons have no right to know the content and origin of the reports.

Because:
🔒 Disclosure of the content could jeopardize the proper performance of the tax authority's duties.
🤐 The protection of the identity of the reporting party prohibits the provision of information.
⚖️ As a rule, the confidentiality interests of the complainant and the tax authority outweigh the disclosure interests of the accused.

An exception only applies if the reported person would otherwise be exposed to unjustified criminal prosecution.
